Party in the village of loazzolo and among the paths of the WWF oasis
Loazzolo 20/06/2015 | Pier Ottavio Daniele
The Loazzolo doc Forteto della Luja is thirty years old. On Sunday 21 and Monday 22 June we celebrated in the farmhouse among the barrels of Moscato passito and the nature of the WWF oasis, a habitat that the Scaglione family has been able to create on the hills of the small town of Langa Astigiana, famous all over the world for its fine meditation wine. Giancarlo Scaglione, founder of Forteto, is an internationally renowned oenologist and a researcher with a deep knowledge of vineyards and life.
A great Moscato from the mini Doc
26 JUNE 2015 | by Luciano Ferraro and Gianni Brera
Imagine an evening at dinner with Gualtiero Marchesi. At the Daniel restaurant, in Milan, with the sunny wines of Valle dell’Acate (Grillo Zagra and Frappato) trying to make their way through the Peruvian sauces of Gaston Acurio. Handshakes, bows, selfies: there is a queue to pay homage to the cook that everyone calls, standing up, Maestro.
Marchesi is 85 years old, with the same alert mind and the bratty flash in his eyes as when he opened his restaurant in Via Bonvesin de la Riva, in the roaring years of Milan. He leaves the official table and speaks of himself as a shy former once locked in the kitchen, who now no longer shirks. He feels like a composer, in the musical sense, creator of harmonies in the dishes. He does not drink, but inhales the earthy aromas of Moro, a Nero d’Avola from ultra-ripe grapes. “I was the first to create an important wine list here, in 1960,” he says, replying to those who want him to pay little attention to food-wine combinations. Then he distributes pills of wisdom not only in food and wine: “I look for the purity of the elements, the exaltation of the material. It takes ideas and heart. With the heart, even impossible dishes such as a risotto with mushrooms and salami, tasted a few days ago in a trattoria, become good.” As Marchesi speaks, between smiles and sharp judgments, one thinks about what could be the wine generated by an idea and supported by the heart, honest and surprising like a dish that comes from the kitchen of a trattoria. One is the Moscato Passito di Loazzolo, the smallest DOC in Italy, 6 hectares of vineyards and a dozen producers. Last week this Moscato from the upper Langa of Asti celebrated its thirtieth birthday, with a series of tastings and meetings in the village of 400 inhabitants.
In 1985, when the wine was born from an intuition of the oenologist, biologist and producer Giancarlo Scaglione, it amazed Italy. Scaglione’s first label is still the best today: Forteto della Luja. The tasting gave mystical stimuli to Gianni Brera and Luigi Veronelli. The journalist declaimed: “He who drinks wine and understands and appreciates it is like one who, hearing music, hears the angels pass by and distinguishes them.” And the critic, reinforcing: “I don’t just hear the angels passing, I don’t just distinguish them, once again I become Chagall’s angel.” It is a meditation wine, sweet and fruity, it smells of apricot and spices. The grapes are harvested until November, when noble rot advances on the berries, which are then dried. Scaglione, who is now 74 years old, after a career spent as director of Gancia, was enraptured by “an idea of ethnoagriculture“, the recovery and cultivation of local plants, such as the local Moscato vineyards, thinking of the tradition of sweet wines from this area of Piedmont. A group of other small producers shared the idea, until they obtained the DOC in 1992.
The Scaglione winery is the first in Piedmont to run on solar energy, the ten hectares of vineyards are cultivated with organic methods and included in a WWF Oasis.

Az. Forteto della Luja “Piasa Raschei” Doc Loazzolo 2009. We are in front of one of the reference bottles in the panorama of Piedmontese and Italian dessert wines. The great light of the ancient gold color that we see in the glass accompanies the nose with hints of dehydrated yellow fruit, candied citron, saffron, bitter almond, cinnamon, candied orange, the very pleasant ether note is white chocolate retro nasally. In the mouth the balance is magnificent and the freshness remarkable. Infinite persistence for a passito of rare elegance and drinkability.
